When Sony released God of War (2018) on PC in January 2022, it felt like the breaking of a dam. For years, the idea of a flagship PlayStation exclusive leaving the console ecosystem was heresy. Yet, there it was: Kratos and Atreus’ Norse saga, running on Steam with unlocked framerates, ultra-wide support, and Nvidia DLSS. The port was a critical and commercial triumph.
Naturally, the immediate question from PC gamers wasn't if more ports were coming, but when. Following the successful ports of Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, all eyes turned to the Greek saga. While God of War Ragnarök eventually landed on PC in September 2024, a massive elephant remains in the room: What about God of War 2?
To clarify, we are not talking about the 2022 sequel to the Norse reboot (now officially titled God of War Ragnarök). We are talking about the 2007 PlayStation 2 classic—the direct sequel to the original God of War—that saw Kratos atop the Titan Gaia, scaling the back of a god, consumed by pure, unadulterated rage. God of War 2 is widely considered arguably the greatest action game of its generation. god of war 2 pc port
Why is it not on PC? And will it ever be?
Ideally, Sony would contract Bluepoint Games (the masters of Demon’s Souls remake and Shadow of the Colossus) to fully remake God of War 2 from the ground up for PC and PS5. Let’s dream for a moment. If Sony announces God of War 2 natively for PC tomorrow, here is what the community would demand:
While the art direction of God of War 2 is timeless, the raw assets are not. A straight port with a 720p resolution and 30 FPS lock would be laughed off Steam. To meet modern expectations (1440p, 120+ FPS, anti-aliasing), the developers would need to: Scalable HUD and font rendering; UI layout profiles
This costs money. Is the juice worth the squeeze for a 17-year-old game?
Why are fans clamoring for God of War 2 over the original 2005 game? The answer is reputation.
God of War II is frequently cited (alongside The Last of Us and Zelda: Ocarina of Time) as one of the greatest video games ever made. Upon its release for the PS2 in 2007—late in the console’s life cycle—developers squeezed impossible performance out of aging hardware.
Critics praised it for improving every single mechanic from the first game. It is tighter, harder, and more cinematic than its predecessor. If only one Greek-era game gets the PC treatment, the community overwhelmingly votes for God of War 2.
