The Modern Day: The story shifts to present-day Japan. Tenma Kaido (the protagonist) is a hot-blooded, impulsive young man with a strong sense of justice. Strange geological disturbances and meteor sightings begin to occur.
The Incident: Tenma and his calmer, more analytical friend, Ken Shido, investigate a strange phenomenon. They encounter a mysterious woman named Mika Shido (no relation to Ken, despite the shared surname in translation; in the original, her name is Mika Shido, while his is Ken Shido—though they are distinct characters). Mika is actually an archaeologist investigating ancient ruins connected to the Gransazer legend.
The Awakening: Suddenly, the alien forces (agents of Warp Monarch) attack the location to prevent the Gransazers from reawakening. During the chaos, Tenma and Ken are bombarded by a mysterious light from the ancient ruins. This light is the "Knuckle Riser," the transformation device.
The Climax: With the Earth in imminent danger, the ancient DNA within Tenma activates. He instinctively uses the Knuckle Riser and shouts his transformation phrase. He transforms into Sazer Tarious (the Gransazer of the Fire Tribe). Ken also awakens as Sazer Mithras. A battle ensues, and Tenma uses his power to defeat the initial alien scout, establishing the start of the new war for Earth's survival.
When a massive Warrior Beast named Garudinus smashes through a dam, the four characters realize they were chosen by ancient crystals. The first transformation is iconic.
