The Future: Will This Tool Become Obsolete?
As Huawei shifts toward 5G and HiLink 2.0 embedded chips, the classic huawei modem terminal.exe is fading. Modern Huawei modems use MBIM (Mobile Broadband Interface Model) and proprietary JSON over HTTP for management. However, the die-hard community of developers continues to reverse-engineer these newer protocols. For now, for any legacy Huawei 3G or 4G dongle, this tool remains the ultimate swiss army knife. huawei modem terminal.exe
Troubleshooting
1) Preparation
- Install drivers: Plug the modem into your PC and install official Huawei drivers or accept Windows driver installation. Confirm device appears in Device Manager under "Ports (COM & LPT)" (e.g., "Huawei Mobile Connect - 3G PC UI Interface (COM5)").
- Identify COM port: Note the COM port number assigned (COMx). If modem is HiLink (acts as network adapter), it may not expose a COM port — see section 1.3.
- Install terminal: Use terminal.exe (or alternatives: PuTTY, Tera Term, RealTerm). If you don't have terminal.exe, download PuTTY (serial mode) or Tera Term.
