I understand you're looking for a way to get an Oxygen OS-like experience on your Redmi Note 8 Pro (codenamed begonia).

However, it's important to clarify: Oxygen OS has never been officially ported to the Redmi Note 8 Pro, and there's no direct, stable "Oxygen OS ROM" for this device due to its unique MediaTek Helio G90T chipset (most custom ROM development focuses on Snapdragon devices).

Here are the realistic alternatives to get a similar look, feel, and features:

Steps (Theoretical):

  1. Unlock bootloader (erases all data).
  2. Flash TWRP via Fastboot: fastboot flash recovery twrp_begonia.img
  3. Boot into TWRP.
  4. Wipe: Dalvik, System, Data, Cache. (Do NOT wipe Vendor or Internal Storage unless specified).
  5. Copy Oxygen OS port zip to phone storage.
  6. Flash the zip via TWRP Install.
  7. Flash a compatible GApps package (if not included) and disable AVB 2.0/force encryption zip (often required for MediaTek).
  8. Reboot. First boot can take 10-15 minutes.

Prerequisites

  • Device: Redmi Note 8 Pro (Codename: begonia). Do not try this on the regular Redmi Note 8 (ginkgo).
  • PC: Windows, Linux, or macOS.
  • USB Cable: Preferably the original cable for stable data transfer.
  • Battery: Ensure your phone has at least 50% charge.

Would It Be Worth It Today?

In 2025, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is aging. Android 13/14 custom ROMs (like crDroid or Evolution X) offer a near-Oxygen feel with better stability. In fact, many Pixel-like ROMs now include:

  • Customizable quick settings
  • Fluid animations
  • Minimal bloat
  • Working FOD (fingerprint) and 64MP camera via GCam

Oxygen OS is no longer what it was — ColorOS has merged with it. The magic of Oxygen OS 11 is gone. So chasing an old port for begonia feels nostalgic but impractical.

Step 5: Installation

  1. Transfer Files:
    • Connect your phone (while in Recovery mode) to your PC.
    • Transfer the Oxygen OS ROM .zip and the GApps .zip to your phone's internal storage.
  2. Install ROM:
    • In Recovery, go to Install.
    • Select the Oxygen OS ROM zip file.
    • Swipe to install. Wait for the process to finish.
  3. Install GApps:
    • Go back to Install.
    • Select the GApps zip file.
    • Swipe to install.
  4. Reboot:
    • Go back to the main screen of the recovery.
    • Select Reboot > System.

How to Install These (Real ROMs):

The process is identical to the one described above, but you will use files from trusted XDA Developers threads. Always read the entire first post (OP) for instructions.

What About Ports?

The only way to get Oxygen OS on a non-OnePlus phone is through unofficial custom ROM ports. These are developed by independent programmers in the modding community who take an Oxygen OS build from a OnePlus device (e.g., OnePlus 6T or 7 Pro) and modify it to work on another phone.

For the Redmi Note 8 Pro (codename: begonia), this path is extremely difficult.

1. Best Option: Use a Custom ROM with AOSP + OOS Customization

Several AOSP-based custom ROMs for Redmi Note 8 Pro allow you to theme and tweak the UI to closely resemble Oxygen OS.

Recommended ROMs (Android 13/14):

  • Pixel Experience Plus — not Oxygen OS, but very clean and fluid; with customization you can add OOS icon packs, fonts, and QS panel styles.
  • crDroid — highly customizable; you can mimic Oxygen OS’s Quick Settings, status bar, and gestures.
  • Evolution X — includes many UI tweaks, supports OOS-like lock screen clock and notification shades.

⚠️ Unlocking bootloader and installing custom ROMs on begonia is tricky because of MediaTek's bootloader restrictions. You'll need to use MTK Client or SP Flash Tool.

Step 1: Unlock the Bootloader

Xiaomi devices come with a locked bootloader. You cannot install a custom recovery or ROM without unlocking it.

  1. Enable Developer Options:
    • Go to Settings > About Phone.
    • Tap MIUI Version 7 times until you see "You are now a developer."
  2. Enable Unlocking:
    • Go to Settings > Additional Settings > Developer Options.
    • Enable OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging.
  3. Bind Account:
    • Insert an active SIM card.
    • Go to Developer Options > Mi Unlock Status.
    • Tap "Add account and device." Sign in to your Mi Account.
  4. Unlock Tool:
    • Download the official Mi Unlock Tool on your PC.
    • Boot your phone into Fastboot Mode (Power off, then hold Volume Down + Power).
    • Connect to PC and run the Unlock tool.
    • Note: Xiaomi usually imposes a waiting period (7 to 30 days for this device) before the unlock is allowed. You must wait this out.
