A low, guttural sound is heard. It sounds like a monk chanting, but the voice is distorted, playing in reverse.
Lan stirs in the bedroom. The noise stops instantly.
SCENE 3
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Minh is standing in the corner of the room, filming himself with the handheld camera. His eyes are wide, dark circles underneath them. He looks exhausted.
MINH (Speaking Vietnamese, terrified) "Lan... Lan, wake up. Look at this."
He points the camera at the ceiling. There are muddy footprints leading from the balcony, across the floor, and stopping right above their heads on the ceiling.
LAN (Groggy) "What is this? Did you walk on the ceiling?"
MINH "The door was locked. I locked it myself."
Suddenly, the room temperature drops. The camera focus glitches, blurring the image. A high-pitched screech pierces the silence. It sounds like the mô côi (funeral siren) used in Vietnamese countryside funerals, but coming from inside the walls.
SCENE 4
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
SUBTITLE (Vietnamese): Đêm thứ 14. 2:45 AM. (Night 14. 2:45 AM.)
The camera is stationary again. The kitchen light turns on by itself. We see a shadow move across the kitchen floor, but there is no person there to cast it.
The shadow stops. It looks like it is crouching.
Slowly, a figure begins to rise from the floor in the corner of the kitchen. It is pale, wearing old, tattered black pajamas—traditional funeral attire. Its face is obscured by long, messy black hair.
The entity turns its head toward the camera.
CRASH!
A framed photo of the couple flies off the shelf and smashes against the opposite wall. The entity vanishes instantly.
SCENE 5
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Minh is asleep alone. Lan is missing. The camera is filming the empty space beside him.
SUBTITLE (Vietnamese): Đêm thứ 15. 3:15 AM. (Night 15. 3:15 AM.)
Minh wakes up. He feels the space next to him. It is cold. He grabs the camera.
MINH "Lan? Lan!"
He runs into the living room. The front door is wide open, swaying in the wind. The altar is smashed; the incense is scattered across the floor.
He runs to the balcony. He points the camera down to the street below.
Lan is standing in the middle of the empty intersection street, facing away from him, perfectly still under the flickering streetlights.
MINH (Screaming) "Lan! Come back inside!"
Lan does not turn. Instead, she slowly lifts her head up—too far up, until her neck breaks the natural angle. She begins to levitate. Her feet leave the asphalt. She floats higher and higher until she is level with their apartment window on the fourth floor.
Minh staggers back from the balcony, terrified.
He turns around to run back inside the apartment.
Standing in the doorway of the bedroom, inches from his face, is the entity. It is tall, emaciated, and grinning.
MINH (Screams)
The camera drops to the floor. The lens cracks. The image cuts to static.
