How to Use the Book for Maximum Results (PDF or Print)

Downloading the PDF is useless if you don't know how to study with it. Most people fail because they read it like a novel.

The Murphy Method (Do this daily):

  1. The Diagnostic Test (Do this first!) : At the front of the book (or PDF), there is a 50-question diagnostic test. Do it. Your score tells you which units to study. (Got question 5 wrong? Go to Unit 5 on Past Simple).
  2. One Unit Per Day: Do not cram 10 units in an hour. Do 1 unit. Read the left page carefully. Highlight the examples.
  3. The "Cover and Recall" Trick: After reading the left page, cover the explanation and look only at the examples. Can you explain why the grammar is used?
  4. Do the exercises immediately: Do not skip the right page. Write your answers in a notebook (or on a scrap paper if using a locked PDF).
  5. Check every answer: Do not cheat. If you get it wrong, re-read the left page.
  6. Review Units: Every 5 units, review the previous 5. Murphy includes "Review Units" specifically for this.

2. The "Essential Grammar in Use" App

While Essential is for beginners, the same ecosystem exists for Intermediate via the Cambridge Bookshelf app. You can purchase the digital unit-by-unit or full license.
