"Top" repair status often involves a hybrid approach: use Trex 2 for older WD drives (up to 6TB) and PC-3000 for newer families. But for pure competency, mastering Trex 2 separates true hardware hackers from GUI-dependent operators.
SMART-based triage (if accessible)
- Reallocated_Sector_Ct > 0: Backup immediately; failing.
- Current_Pending_Sector > 0: Backup and run offline surface tests.
- UDMA_CRC_Error_Count > 0: Replace cable/port; reseat connectors.
- Multi-Zone Error or Firmware errors: Suspect firmware corruption; consult specialist.
Safety and prerequisites
- Data priority: If data is important, stop and consider professional data recovery first — DIY can make recovery impossible.
- ESD protection: Use grounded wrist strap and anti-static mat.
- Tools: Torx drivers (T6–T10), Phillips set, precision spudger, multimeter, power supply or SATA/USB adapter, heat gun (only for controlled reflow), magnifier.
- Environment: Clean, dust-free, low-humidity workspace.
4. Bad Sector Management (P-List and G-List)
When a drive has physical bad sectors, simply cloning it can cause the heads to degrade further. The Trex 2 Top allows for direct manipulation of the defect lists:
- P-List (Primary Defect List): Bad sectors identified during manufacturing. The Trex 2 Top can reset or manage this list to stop the drive from endlessly retrying to read known-dead sectors.
- G-List (Grown Defect List): Bad sectors developed during the drive's life.
- Resetting the Translator: After modifying defect lists, the tool regenerates the translator table, effectively mapping out bad sectors so the drive skips them during recovery operations.
